The last section of research, I decided to gain inspiration into other writers, cinematographers, editors and directors. From doing this, it will increase my knowledge on how the creation and process of a film works. I done this my researching into each of the roles and seeing a variety of different people who were famous for their performance and production on a film. Once I have found a persistent and well known person of the role, I will research into what they have done and what they have been apart of creating. This will give me a good understanding and amount of knowledge of how they performed their role in the product. I decided not to just base the people on the horror genre as I know there are many people that have done excellent work but not within that genre.

In this task, I was asked to identify what my role is within the group and what is expected of each role. As I am in a small group, we have had to half the roles between each other and take on more than one role so that the product will be achieved to our best ability. Before choosing the roles for each group member, I did some research into the roles. I created a mind map of each role to see what is expected for each person and what their role consists of. This gave my team an idea of what role each person thought they would be best at and helping them chose their preferred role. Once we had chosen our roles, I chose to do some more research into what is expected of that role and also famous people of that profession. I took the role as the editor an writer. Therefore, I done more in-depth research into what a writer and editor is required to do so I can get an understanding on what I will need to do for the short film to become successful. To give me some more ideas, I then searched into well known and famous writer and editors as I looked into different horror films, and the writers and editors form this. There were many writers that was very popular, therefore I thought theses would be the best to be my inspiration in taking on this role. The way in which I created the presentation and mind maps is from Microsoft Word and Microsoft Powerpoint. I used Word to create the mind maps, I presented the different roles through this way as it is clear and understandable. Using the different colours to show the different roles makes it look organised and easy to read. The specific role I have taken was shown through a Powerpoint. I done this so it will be laid out separately and that each slide would be based on one specific role.
For this task, I was going to explore the ways in how synergy is created across a range of media products to help promote to the widest audience possible. Synergy is a very important part of the marketing of a film as it is the way in which the film is distributed to the audience. what is synergy?Synergy is the releasing of two or more products through one product and promoting each other. From doing this, it creates a larger effect than just promoting one product. It gives the products a mutual beneficial relationship and they are both advantaging each other. synergy examples:
In this slideshow, I have analysed and researched the ways in which the three horror films have promoted their films and the ways they have done it. The ways that the films have used synergy are done to create a global appeal and reach a wide audience. The three films I chose to research are Insidious 2, The Conjuring and Paranormal Activity. From doing this task, it has provided me with knowledge on the way in which media products advertise and promote their film through synergy. When researching into what each of the films did in relation to synergy gave me an idea of how I should present my film through synergy and the conventions that are used.
For this task, I will be analysing a variety of different film reviews to increase my knowledge of what the typical conventions are so I will be prepared for when I create my own review based on my short film. I will be evaluating horror film reviews and another from a different genre so I can see the way in which the horror genre is presented differently to other genres. When analysing the reviews, I will be looking at the key conventions used and how they are presented through different fonts, colours, images, layout and language. When creating a review, these aspects are very important in attracting an audience to read the review. paranormal activitythe conjuryingspiderman 2Once I had researched and analysed the film reviews, it came to my attention that a review is not to just attract an audience but to make the audience more familiar with the film and give them important information that may make them want to watch the film in the future. Having a film featured in a magazine is an excellent way of promoting the films regarding on either it is good or bad. However, having the review feature in the magazine can have advantages and disadvantages. The disadvantages is that if the review is bad, people may not be interested or want to see the film due to what the review has stated. But, the advantages is that if the review is good, many people will be intrigued to watch the film as they will want to see why it is such a worthy film.
For this section of my research, I will be investigating into creating the basis of my target audience research to find out who is my suited target audience is for my short film and the way in which I will be able to attract them towards my product. The ways in which I will be researching is through different aspects in the horror genre and also asking a range of people different questions. The questions will be relating to the horror genre and developing my knowledge on what attracts people to my film.
INITIAL IDEAS1.Which of the four quadrant(s) would your film appeal to?
When researching and asking people questions, they will be from all four of these categories and it will give me an idea of who my short film will appeal to most. Horror films have a wide range of people that enjoy them, from any gender and any age ranges, however, they are usually aimed at older teenager and onwards due to the explicit scenes that occur. To present thees categories, I have created a Prezi that explains the different quadrants and also the quadrant that I will be aiming my short film.
2.What is the target audience for the films you looked at when looking at your influences and genre research?
From my previous tasks, I had analysed a variety of horror short films so I wanted to extend this research within this question. This is why I have evaluated the user rating for horror short films of Moonlight Man and Night Night Nancy. I also looked at a famous and well known horror film so I can analyse and see the difference between the short films and film. I found this information from www.imdb.com, which is a online database for films, television programmes and video games. It identifies the gender and age of these people that have viewed and enjoyed that specific film, game or television programme.
the moonlight man
These are the user ratings for The Moonlight Man found from IMDb. Moonlight Man is a horror short film that is very popular with over a million views on Youtube. Therefore, I thought that this would be a good short film to analyse as it will give me ideas in how to create a successful film. These statistics shows that the average people that enjoyed this short film are males rather that females. The ages that this films was enjoyed by was between 30 to 44. This may be as this age group like to watch different types of films rather than just the typical films that are popular at that moment.
night night nancy
These are the user ratings for the poor short film Night Night Nancy found from IMDb. This is also another well known short film, with over three million views on Youtube. From looking at this short film, I will be able to see what audience the horror short films appeal to and how I can attract my target audience. The statistics shows that the average people that enjoyed this short film are males rather than females. The ages that this film was aimed at was between 30 to 44. This is similar to The Moonlight Man as to the age ranges, this may mean that this age range enjoy short films the most.
paranormal activty
These are the user ratings for Paranormal Activity found from IMDb. Paranormal Activity is a film, rather than a short film. It created $193.4 million for its box office, therefore it is a very famous and popular horror film. This film is more well known and common, you can see this as the amount of votes are more than the previous graphs. These statistics shows that the average people that enjoyed this short film are males rather than females. The age ranges that this film was enjoyed by are 18-29. The age rating for this film is 15 and over, this shows that the audience that will enjoy this film is over that age.
3.Are there any other audience groups that your film may appeal to?
For this section of the target audience research, I looked at a well-known recent horror film and researched into their user ratings. The film I will be researching and analysing is ‘Get Out’, a film that was released in 2017. This film was very popular when it was released and help me understand how to appeal to my audience. I researched into the user ratings to give me a better understanding of what type of people would watch the film, through their gender and ages.
GET OUT user reviewsMales:
The total amount of males was 111216 that voted for enjoying the film. This is a lot higher than the amount of females, implying that this horror film, or the genre is liked more by the male gender. From this, it has shown me that my horror short film will be more aimed at males than females as they enjoy and prefer this genre more.
females:
The overall amount that the female votes came to was 25641, over half the number than the males. As the females votes are low, this tells us that the females may prefer other genres as they don’t enjoy feeling scared or the genre in general. This also supports the stereotype that males are more brave in watching horror films than females.
ages under 18:
The voting from this rating is a combination of the males and females who are under 18 votes. The number of votes on this category is 1105, this is lower than the male and females section. Suggesting that the film has low ratings due to only being a a 15 certificate, so not many under 18’s will have seen the film. Another reason may be that the younger ages do not enjoy the horror genre as much as other age ranges. However the average vote for the film was 8.3 so they may have enjoyed the film, but due to not have many votes it seems like they didn’t enjoy it. I now understand that the horror genre may b enjoyable for some young people, but more people in other age ranges enjoy it more and I will target my film at an older age.
ages 18-29:
For this category, the overall voting was 65776 for people of the ages 18-29. This implies that many people of these ages enjoy and liked to watch the film, the votes is more than double the amount for the ages under 18. Suggesting that this age enjoys the film the most and was targeted at the category. The overall average vote was 7.9, therefore 0.4 away from the under 18’s. Although there is more votes for this category than the under 18’s so this contributes to the average vote, making it lower for the ages 18-29.
Ages 30-44:
The ages 30-44 had a total of 49907 votes, with an average vote of 7.5. This is less than the ages 18-29, but still a very high amount. Suggesting that is age range enjoys the horror genre, but some people however do not like it and are not interested. From looking at the different age ranges, I can see that the older the age goes up, the average votes goes down. This indicates that people of an older age do not enjoy the horror genre and may prefer other genres.
user ratings:
Get Out was a very popular film this year (2017) and watched by many people. I researched on IMDb, and collected data that is related to ages and gender groups on whether they liked the film. This gives me a better understanding on who the film is aimed at and whether the target audience enjoyed the film, giving me an idea of the ages and genders that my film will benefit from being aimed at.
hush 2008/9
Once I had finished my research into user ratings for the horror film. I wanted to further my research into films that only have an appeal to a specific audience. Therefore, I done thorough research into any films that were not distributed in the US. I found a film called ‘Hush’ that was distributed in many countries, including the UK, however not in the US.
Hush is a British horror film that is about a young couple on a motorway journey who are drawn into a game of cat and mouse with a truck driver following a near accident. The film is produced by Warp X, UK Film Council and Film4 who supplied the funding for the film. The film was distributed by Optimum Releasing. As of this, this could be a reason to why it was not distributed in the US. The film was produced by British based companies; therefore, this may be why Hush was not spread to the US. Another reason may have been because of the plot and actors. The plot of the film is British based, with the main actor and actresses being British, this meaning that people in the US would not be able to relate to the film and be interested in watching it. To conclude, from these reasons, this could be why Hush was not distributed to a wider audience worldwide. 4.What other 'niche' factors could be considered about how you might appeal to an audience?
Niche factors are included in films so they appeal to specific audiences. An example would be casting a well known actor or actress to portray one of the characters or locating the film in a certain location. These will attract a wider audience as people will be more interested if they can relate to the plot.
I will be researching into the horror film the 'Nightmare on Elm Street’ as it includes a range of niche factors, for example, the actors, director and history behind the film. This film was very successful, therefore these features may be a useful aspect when thinking into my short film and target audience. 5.What different 'tribes' of youth may be especially interested in your film
For this question, I researched more into my target audience through the different tribes within the community and what would be suitable for the horror genre. From looking into this, it will help me aim my short film at a wider audience and allowing me to target at specific people. There are 5 main different tribes, they are:
Before I chose which UK tribe would be best suited to my horror short film. I researched into the tribes and see what each category would be interested in and their different personalities. I done my research on a website called: http://www.uktribes.com. 6.Would your film be limited to a UK audience or might it have a global appeal?
I think that my short film would have a UK appeal, as it is set and based in the UK. This will mean that the audience will feel that they have a connection and that they can relate to the film. As the film is produced by a low budget company, me and my team cannot afford to advertise and distribute the film worldwide. However, I think my short film could appeal to a global audience as the horror genre is enjoyed and watch worldwide. Also, the short film may have a global appeal if we had a bigger budget, as we could afford famous actors and actresses, also professional and specialists in the production areas. Therefore, or short film will be aimed at the UK and have an interest there, however it could come global.
7.What limitations are there on your production?
There are many limitations that will arise when in the production process of my short film. This will be due to my film company not be well known and a worldwide company, this means there are some limits and restricts that I will face. Many of these restrictions result from only having a low budget and not having access to resources. The limitations that will occur in the production process will be in the areas of: editing softwares, costumes and makeup, special effects, locations, film sets and equipment. As I will be missing professionals in all of these areas, me and my team will need to improve and take on ore than one job role to make sure the production process is similar to a real film company and the way in which what they would do.
8.How will your production elicit an audience response?
In order to make my production effective, I must make sure that it fits my audience and see what they would enjoy to be included and create a response. From all of the research I have previously done on other horror films, I was able to see how they attracted their target audience. Therefore, I done some of my own research into my audience by asking them a variety of different questions about the horror genre and films. This helped me gain a better understanding to who my target audience will be for our film and how to gain the widest target audience possible before we start creating the concept of the film. Once I have found the results of the target audience research, I looked into the ways in which we could incorporate this into the short film so it attracts the audience effectively.
RESEARCHtarget research audience
To help with my target audience research I decided to carry out primary research through the methods of social media and a survey. I done this research to provide me with a better understanding on the ways in which the audience would be attracted to my short film and what should be included within it.
For this method, I created a survey from an online website called ‘Survey Monkey’. On this website, you need to input the questions and answers and once it is put together people are able to answer them through a link. After I had collected the data, I created graphs to show the results as it is a clear and organised way of presenting the information. The data helped me understand the ways in which my target audience will enjoy and be attract to my short film, it has given me ideas on what I should include and ….

WHAT ASPECTS DO YOU ENJOY MOST IN A HORROR FILM?

For this task, I created two mood board that show the different aspects of the horror genre. The two aspects I will be portraying is iconography and costume, I think these are the most important elements shown in the horror genre. From creating these mood boards, it helped me gain a better understanding on the elements that my horror film could contain and what is used in popular horror films. I looked at a variety of images from the horror genre through the conventions of costume and iconography, this has helped me gain an idea of what I could include in my short film. iconography mood boardMy first mood board that I created was based around iconography that is used within the horror genre. All of the iconography used within this genre is done to make the audience feel fear and scared of what may occur. From creating an iconography mood board, I could see the types of props and ideas that are used within the genre and how these are used to scare and make the audience fear with what will happen next. The iconography used represents clearly portrays the codes and conventions within the genre as it shows fear, death and violence. Many of the images in the mood board involve blood, this indicates that there is violence and death within this genre. Both of these elements create fear and scare people, this helps shows that this is one of the codes and conventions within this genre and people enjoy horror genre to feel these feelings. Costume Mood board My second mood board was created with images from a variety of different costumes that are typically used within the horror genre films. The costumes used within the horror genre are used to create fear and scare the audience. From creating this mood board, I got to see what type of costumes that the innocent and villains would wear and how this represents their character. I found that many of the costumes that the villain are wearing are darkly coloured as these colours connote to danger and evil. They usually have a mask or something over their face to cover their identity so it is unknown to the characters and audience. However, for the victims and innocent characters they are dressed in lighter and more casual clothing. This makes the audience feel more sympathetic for the characters as they seems like ordinary people and they haven’t done any harm to anyone. The makeup of these characters are natural and they have blood and dirt on their outfits showing they are in danger and that they have been injured by something. From the images, you can see that they are all females, showing us that females are the most vulnerable to danger and likely to be haunted, captured and injured. A theory that could be used to represent the costumes within the horror genre is The Male Gaze by Laura Mulvey. This theory suggests that audiences are put into the perspective of a heterosexual male. The scenes focus on the woman’s body and putting your view in the eyes of a male. It presents that women are seen as objects to males and are only there for pleasure. The theory will further my research as in many horror films portray the victim as a female. Showing that this gender is vulnerable and can easily be manipulated. This ties in with the theory as it is making females look and seem like an object as they are getting captured and wounded by the villains.
For this task, I will be analysing a variety of horror short film posters. I will be able to evaluate and analyse the codes and conventions that have been used and the way in which it has been presented to the audience. I show to analyse the horror genre as this is the genre I will be basing my short film on. Therefore doing this it will give me a better understanding on how the genre is portrayed through the posters in a way to interest the potential audience. I also chose to analyse four different short films posters as this will give me a wide range of ideas in what is the best way to present and display the poster. house call The first film poster I analysed was on a horror short film called ‘House Call’. I haven’t previously seen this film so I could only base what was on the poster on how the director wanted me to see the film. There are many codes and conventions from the horror genre being used within this poster. An example would be the use of dark colours so it is easy to identify that it is presenting the horror genre as this is a key convention used in horror films. From analysing this poster, it helped me develop an idea of the way in which the horror genre is presented through posters and understand the ways in which they attract an audience. skypemare The second horror film poster I analysed was of the film, ’Skypemare’. I have seen this short film before so I already had an understanding on what the director was trying to present. However for this task, I chose to imagine that I had never seen the film previously and only base my ideas on the poster. The codes and conventions used in this poster portray the film as being a modern as of the use of technology aspects. lights out This horror poster was for the short film ‘Lights Out’. This poster uses a variety of codes and conventions that are used in the horror genre. The use of dark colours and the font of the title gives a horror and and eerie feeling as it is different to what is typically used for film posters. I found that this film poster was very effective as it made me feel intrigued in what the film was about and made me want to know what was going to happen next. This is due to the figure in the background and why there is a tape marks over the light switch. logan The last short film poster I analysed was called ‘Logan’. This poster was different to the other posters I had analysed as it was somewhat going against the stereotypical horror film codes and conventions due to the bright colours. However, there is also many codes and conventions that are used in the horror genre within this poster, for example blood. From analysing the poster, I got to see that you don’t need to use dark colours to present the horror genre and that there are different ways in which it can be shown to the audience.
In this task, I had explored what a genre is and how it is important for the producers and the audience. Also, I had to identify the codes and conventions used within the genre I have chosen to do for my final product. I did this by creating a presentation on different short films and how they use the horror codes and conventions throughout.
Genre:Codes and conventions of horror:
From doing this, I learnt that a genre is very important for the audience as it allows them to understand what the type of film it will be like. For example, a horror is going to be scary and a comedy will be funny. It is also useful for the production side of the film as it helps the producers in a way of how the film should be created and constructed, so it fulfils the codes and conventions of that specific genre.
In this task, I had to research the codes and conventions of different genres of short films. I done this in a variety of ways to help me get a better understanding of what is used in short films.
Firstly, I decided to create a slideshow of the definition so I could understand the key conventions used with a shortfall. I created the slideshow online on a website called 'Powtoon'. I did this because I thought it would make the information more fun and interesting to read.
To help me get an even better understanding of short films and what they consist of, I chose to analyse some films. I chose 3 different types of genres of short films that I found on Youtube and analysed them through a clear table. I chose to analyse a variety of genres so I could see the different conventions of each. This will also help me chose my favourite genre and the one I would like to do for my final product.
Drama Genre:
The first genre I chose to analyse was drama. From watching this short film, I was able to see how the drama genre is presented. For this genre, I analysed a short film called 'Operator'. It is based on the fire service telephone centre and a woman, who is the operator, is taking a phone call with a woman who is trapped in a house fire with her son. The way in which the short film was presented showed me the key conventions that is represented within the drama genre.
romance genre:
The next genre I chose to analyse was romance. For this genre the short film I chose to analyse was 'I Miss You'. I decided on this short film as I thought it would meet all of the key conventions used in a romantic short film.
Horror Genre:
The last genre I chose to analyse was the horror. I chose to analyse 'Lights Out' for this genre as I thought it consists of all of the main conventions that could occur in a short film that is of the horror genre.
As I thought I may want to create a horror short film, I decided to analyse another film of this genre. I chose to analyse the horror short film, ’Scrambled’. I thought this film would have some conventions that may give me an idea of what to create in my short film.
After doing this task, I got a better understanding on the different conventions shown within each genre and the ways in which you analyse a short films. From this, I found that each of the genres have different elements on how it is presented. For example the horror genre, mainly uses dark colours and lighting. Whereas the romance genre uses brighter colours and high key lighting. I have decided to do the horror genre for my final product. I chose this because when I was analysing short films from the horror genre I enjoyed how they aren’t like a typical film and that they can make people feel different emotions throughout. I thought doing this genre will be interesting for when I have to create my own as there is a variety of different ways it can be done. This will help me for my final product as I have a wider knowledge on the conventions used and how to analyse it to show the horror genre in an effective way.
